The Story

GHOST PARTICLES (Messages from Rude Van Steenes) began during the global pandemic, a collaboration between singer, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist Rude Van Steenes and musical composer, keyboard aficionado Greg Fraser. They had met as members of Electronic Dream Factory in the early 90’s.

Rude’s introspective and romanticized poetry, inspired by the writings of Christopher Isherwood, Edgar Allan Poe and David Bowie, fused perfectly with Greg’s compositions.

The intent was to have Rude record the vocals. Sadly, Rude passed away before this could be done, leaving his wife Michele and Greg with an unfinished project that haunted them both.

Greg recruited Benjamin Russell who graciously agreed to do the vocals. As there were no melodies, Greg sent the tracks with spoken lines indicating where the vocals should be. Benjamin created melodies and sang Rude's words, then sent the tracks back to Greg who finalized the mixes.

Benjamin’s stellar contribution with his folk, punk, rock and jazz influences, brought the lyrics to life in a masterfully creative way that respects Rude’s intentions and love of all genres of music.

Rounding out the sound is a wonderfully soulful contribution from guitarist, Marcel La Fleur, who had collaborated with Rude for over forty years.

The four songs on this EP work together to present a moody, introspective vision of the complexities of life. The romantic SIRENS CALLING pulls the listener into a mystical world void of control, whereas THE STRANGER WITHIN challenges us to face our demons. RAIN COLLAPSING is as hopeful as it is haunting. FIND THE LIGHT stands alone as the last lyric Rude wrote when he was critically ill.

As much as GHOST PARTICLES (Messages from Rude Van Steenes) could be referred to as a “legacy project”, it can also be seen as an envoy to the future.

About: The romantic SIRENS CALLING pulls the listener into a mystical world void of control.
LYRICS
Sirens Calling

The sound of those who faltered
and haunt the edge of nerves
cutting through the dark of night
a slice of what returns
And all your days with numbers
fly hazard in the wind
like styles and hesitations
that glow beneath your skin

Beware of tides and treasures
they blind you for the bliss
beware the hands that find you
beneath a stolen kiss
the heart becomes the matter
the mind becomes the twist
if only she could understand
the matter not the myth

Chorus
The sirens are calling
Like mystery tales
A game of seduction
A ship without sails
The sirens keep calling
Your heart must stay true
The risk of temptation
Runs wild and amused

Regret the words of envy
the status running wild
the borders of frustration
frame the system not the mind
the bruise of stained ambition
a bitter pill that sailed
lost inside your pillow slip
with dreams beyond the pale

02 - RAIN COLLAPSING
BPM: 120
ISRC: CARI82400015
Written by Rude Van Steenes, Greg Fraser and Benjamin Russell

About: RAIN COLLAPSING is as hopeful as it is haunting.
LYRICS
Rain Collapsing

I can't say I've been here before
I couldn't even try
All those things they're talkin' about
Never entered my mind
Whispers are like fascinations
Crawling on the floor
Sinners, lies and indiscretions
Knocking at my door

Wild-eyed and sleep suspended
Lost in restless tales
I can't imagine where I'm going
Or even where I've been
Thought I saw the lights of something
Turn into her eyes
Must have been an apparition
From the other side

Chorus
Listen to the rain collapsing
On an endless street
Feel it wash away the haunting
Of a late-night scream
And deep behind the face of danger
Lies a trick or three
So listen to the rain collapsing
Washing over you and me

You ask me to believe in something
Where's the thrill for sale
Stuck in this roomful of mirrors
Trying to seal my faith
Seems like the days are passing lost
The nights still exist
I woke up beside myself
And never knew what I missed

Chorus
Listen to the rain collapsing
On an endless street
Feel it wash away the haunting
Of a late night scream
And deep in the face of danger
Lies a trick or three
So listen to the rain collapsing
Washing over you and me

03 - THE STRANGER WITHIN
BPM: 92
ISRC: CARI82400016
Written by Rude Van Steenes, Greg Fraser, Benjamin Russell and Marcel LaFleur

About: THE STRANGER WITHIN challenges us to face our demons.
LYRICS
The Stranger Within

Vs1
Cast an echo off my shoulder
push a blind hand through this heat
add the vicious smile of cheaters
where the bottles own the street
in the light’s glow, cool reflections
and the hardness of her mouth
leaves a ghetto on your cracked lips
and a burning in your throat

Chorus
Enter her darkness the chilling dream
of the stranger, the stranger within
so trained and Godless, bound by sin
till the voices, the voices begin
From the stranger, the stranger within
From the stranger, the stranger within

Vs2
Stigma rages in the gallows
bears a tarnished crucifix
so protected so rejected
Book of Shadows three of six
faith in Magick hidden losses
burning candles and a lie
drinks the liquor of salvation
midst the ghostly alibis

Bridge
In the circle of the sacred eye
we stand inside the place where spirits ride
embrace the darkness of the stranger within
golden chalice, lovers bound within
and the voices, the voices begin
from the stranger, the stranger within
and the voices, the voices begin
from the stranger, the stranger within

Find The Light

When it all seems broken
Find the light
When the tide turns against you
Find the light

In the blackest hour
Find the light
The stars still shine
Find the light
